There are different surface protection and construction dust control products that you can get inexpensively exactly for this purpose. For surface protection, many products have been custom-made to suit particular areas in your home. Instead of using a large sheet to just cover things up, there are surface protection cover ups for floors, doors, tubs, toilets, counters, windows, carpets and even HVAC protection to keep small objects, such as screws and nails, from falling into your vents and ducts.

For construction dust control, there are also many products being used to keep dust only in a specific area, easier to clean it up and dispose of later. Zipwall dust control systems, for example, is fast becoming a standard dust control system by many remodelers, builders and contractors. Zipwall is a barrier system that you set up against walls, ceilings and doors to contain the dust in the work area.

A standard kit comes with its own framework and set up tools, such as poles, clamps and grids, so that you won’t need to nail or tape or pin the sheets to the walls, lessening the damage that you might make on your own home, otherwise. The plastic sheets are put up by extension poles, instead, and this is great as it can adapt easily to the size of your work area. The zipwall kits also come with zippers, so that you can create a door in the plastic walls, especially if you’re working in only a small part of the room and not in the room in its entirety. You can use this product with polysheeting to ensure better construction dust control.

There is also this great product called Adhesive Mats used for construction dust control, which you can lay around the perimeter of the work area, and catches the dust that would walk out of the jobsite with the people going in and out. It also works in reverse, ensuring that people with dirty shoes keep the dirt out as they walk into a clean work area. You can use this with shoe and boot covers, which are cheap slip-ons that protect your shoes and boots as well.
